Logan Reserve Secondary School and Special School

The Logan Reserve Secondary School and Special School project is a major new education development designed to meet the growing needs of the local community. Spanning nine allotments along Derby Road, Chambers Flat Road, and Logan Reserve Road, the land is being amalgamated to create two dedicated precincts: a secondary school to the west and a special school to the east.

The staged works for the secondary school include eight new buildings: two learning centres, an administration facility, a performing arts and music centre, a multipurpose hall, a resource and art centre, a junior STEM building, operational services, and a food studies centre. Future stages will add a senior STEM building and a third learning centre.

The special school precinct will provide eleven purpose-built facilities, including multiple learning centres, sensory spaces, a multipurpose hall, administration, and operational services. Together, the two schools will significantly increase educational and support capacity in the Logan region, creating inclusive learning environments tailored to both mainstream secondary students and young people with diverse needs.

The Challenges

  • Bushfire protection: Schools in bushfire-prone areas must comply with standards addressing radiant heat, ember attack, and safe access, while still providing open and welcoming learning environments.
  • Dual school and public use: Shared facilities, such as multipurpose halls and sports centres, serve both students and community users, adding complexity to evacuation planning and fire system performance.
  • Fire separation between buildings: Large campuses with multiple structures require careful siting and detailing to maintain fire compartments, prevent fire spread, and support efficient circulation for students and staff.
  • Ongoing maintenance considerations: Fire safety measures must be robust, practical, and manageable over the long term, avoiding excessive operational burden for school staff.

Bloom’s Impact

  • Bushfire protection: Bloom collaborated with the design team to develop bushfire strategies that met regulatory requirements while respecting the architectural vision, ensuring effective protection without compromising outdoor learning and play spaces.
  • Dual school and public use: Bloom provided fire engineering solutions accommodating both school operations and broader community access. Evacuation flows and system demands were modelled to give stakeholders confidence that shared facilities were safe, compliant, and flexible.
  • Fire separation between buildings: Bloom advised on appropriate fire separation distances and detailing, enabling safe building placement across the campus while maintaining connectivity and efficient circulation.
  • Ongoing maintenance considerations: Fire safety solutions were designed to simplify maintenance requirements, reducing long-term costs and ensuring reliability throughout the life of the schools.
